Are There Fire Ants on Your Lawn? Here’s What You Need to Know

June 14th, 2018

If you live in Texas, then you have seen fire ant mounds popping up in gardens, on the side of the road and — yes — on your lawn. At Greenyard, LLC, we know a lot about these unwanted pests and how to get rid of them.

Why Are There So Many Fire Ants in My Area?

Today, the most common type of fire ant in Texas is the Red Imported Fire Ant, an invasive species from Brazil. These aggressive pests do not have any natural predators to keep their population in check, and they have displaced many native ant species. Red Imported Fire Ants are quickly spreading across the Southeastern United States, and each of their mounds can house hundreds of thousands of ants.

How Do I Know if I Have Fire Ants?

The most obvious sign that you have fire ants on your property is the presence of mounds. Fire ants like to create their mounds in open, sunny areas. They burrow in and out through underground tunnels, so there is no opening at the center of the mound. They will also attack and sting if you disturb their nest.

Even if there are no visible mounds on your lawn, you may still have a fire ant infestation. Their elaborate underground tunnels can travel up to 25 feet away from their nest.

Are Fire Ants Dangerous?

Usually, a fire ant’s sting causes an unpleasant burning sensation and symptoms such as mild irritation and nausea. Like bees, however, fire ants carry a venom that a small percentage of people are seriously allergic to.

If you experience any of these symptoms after being stung, then you should seek medical attention right away:

  • Excessing redness, swelling or itching
  • Shortness of breath
  • Thickening of the tongue
  • Profuse sweating
